Second enlarged edition, edited by the author's son Lorenzo Barotti, who also added a second volume using his father's notes. The first edition, in a single volume, appeared in Ferrara in 1777. A continuation by L. Cicognara and G. Baruffaldi was published in Ferrara in 1811.
This is the first major bio-biographical work on the most outstanding humanists, poets and scientists in Ferrara history, and includes information on Girolamo Savonarola, Matteo Maria Boiardo, Antonio Tebaldeo, Ludovico Ariosto, Celio Calcagnini, Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, Givanni Battista Giraldi Cinzio, Gaspare and Alessandro Sardi, Battista Guarini, Antonio Musa Brasavola, Francesco Alunno, Giovanni Battista Canani, Olimpia Fulvia Morata, Giovanni Battista Riccioli, Girolamo Baruffaldi, to name a few. It also includes information on all the most prominent members of the Este family.
Giovanni Andrea Barotti early in his lif abandoned the legal career to devote himself entirely to poetry and literary studies. He became a member of the Accademia degli Intrepidi, and in 1738 he was accepted into the Consiglio Maggiore and the Magistratura dei Savi. During the same period, he was preparing the critical edition of Tassoni's Secchia rapita, which appeared in Modena in 1744. In 1741, he published a monumental edition of all of Ariosto's works. In 1747, he was appointed permanent librarian of the university, which he persuaded to purchase Cardinal Bentivoglio's magnificent library in 1750. He died in Ferrara in 1772 (cf. D.B.I., Rome, 1964, vol. 6, p. 488).
