The Cantiques Spirituels, a fine paraphrase of texts from the Scriptures, were composed after Racine?s retirement from the theatre. The Hymnes were translated from the Roman Breviary by the young Racine, revised in his mature years and eventually condemned for Jansenist heresy. Found at the extremes of the Racinian corpus, these sacred poems create a deep, intimate connection between the young and mature lyricist, echoing throughout the biblical and secular tragedies.
