Descrizione
Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Most of our understanding of the age of Justinian is based on the works of Procopius of Caesarea, the most important Greek historian of late antiquity. Many modern histories of the period virtually paraphrase his major work, the Wars. Consequently the problem posed by Gibbon, how we are to reconcile the Wars with Procopius two minor works - the panegyrical (and thus in modern eyes insincere) Buildings and the sensational Secret History - still dominates current attitudes. Professor Cameron emphasises the essential unity of the three works and, starting from the minor ones, demonstrates their intimate connection with the Wars. Procopius writings are seen to comprise a subtle whole; only if they are understood in this way can their historical value be properly appreciated. The result is a new evaluation of Procopius which will be central to any future study of the sixth century. ISBN 9780520055179
