First edition of this essay excerpt from the Rendiconto della real Accademia delle scienze di Napoli. The essay is a work by the Italian mathematician Fortunato Padula. The work focuses on the application of infinitesimal calculus and algebra to the solution of complex geometric problems, contributing to the 19th-century scientific debate on analytical geometry and mechanics.Fortunato Padula (1816–1881) was an Italian engineer and politician. After teaching mathematics at the Nunziatella Military College and the Naval College of Naples, in 1860 he was appointed professor of rational mechanics at the University of Naples, where he later served as rector on two occasions. From 1864 until his death, he served as director of the School of Engineering in Naples. He was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei; in 1870 he became a senator of the Kingdom of Italy and in the same year he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
