4 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition thus, with 2 engraved frontispiece (one a portrait), engraved and printed titles, engraved plates (a number folding) and illustrations in the text; strongly bound in contemporary half calf, pebble-grain faux-morocco cloth boards, backs with raised bands, second compartments with black leather labels lettered and ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, green endpapers, joints rubbed with a few short splits (mainly at headbands; but bindings entirely sound, else a bright, crisp, clean copy. With the contemporary binder's ticket of Collins of Manchester on front paste-downs, and small neat personal stamp on front free endpapers. SCARCE. Bedford/Harrison Collection 23545-8 (recording Hirst's 1861 edition).
