First edition, 12mo (171 x 96 mm), vi, 153, [1]pp., half-length engraved portrait of John Metcalf, some light browning, endpapers renewed, recent half calf, marbled boards, spine label lettered in gilt. An account of John Metcalf (1717-1810), a remarkable figure who, despite being blind since childhood, led an extraordinary life. This first edition details his adventures in hunting, card-playing, and even his involvement in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. Metcalf later became a pioneering road builder, constructing around 180 miles of turnpike roads in northern England during the Industrial Revolution.
