Tall and very thick 8vo, in the publisher's best binding of thick beveled boards of full chocolate morocco, both covers with gilt Scott design featuring lettering and vine motif in vivid gilt within a blind embossed framework of wide borders elegantly tooled, the spine with blind ruled bands making compartments with center acorn tools and ruled borders all in blind, one compartment gilt lettered, board edges hatched in blind, turn-ins gilt tooled over marbled endpapers, a.e.g. 840pp. A very handsome and well preserved copy, the text is free of foxing as are the plates, the binding strong and solid with bright gilt and rich dark morocco, a little age along the shoulders and minor expected mellowing but still very attractive.
Edizione: a very handsome illustrated edinburgh edition of the poetical works of one of scotland's and great britain's greatest men of letters. scott's influence was as far reaching as his works were commercially successful. his poetry earned him an offer of the laureateship, which he refused, and was considered quite original in style among the romantics.<br> this is a beautiful collection of all of scott's poems. it includes of course the great metrical romances and famed “miscellaneous pieces” but also includes the songs and fragments scattered throughout his novels and the “specimens” originally printed in his memoirs.
