First edition, LIMITED TO ONLY 725 COPIES, hand-numbered and SIGNED by the editor, Curtis Dahl. With publisher's prospectus laid in. With illustrations from numerous sources printed in green and black, many being from contemporary paintings of whaling, also with chapter opening from woodcuts of the period and silhouettes throughout. 8vo, in the publisher's paper-covered boards decorated with whales, the upper cover with a black morocco label printed in gilt, the spine backed in black morocco and gilt lettered, map endpapers, top edge died. xxxiii, 208pp. A mint copy but for some mellowing of the gilt lettering on the spine panel, probably a production or materials error as there is no other evidence of age or wear whatsoever.
Edizione: limited edition for the american maritime library, signed by the editor and handsomely produced. 'there she blows' reprints ely's narrative originally published in 1849, now supplied with a biographical introduction and a chapter from ely's manuscript autobiography. the volume reprints a piquant book of firsthand whaling experience. the editor, curtis dahl is the great-grandson of the author and the work is reprinted from his inherited copy of the very rare original.
