Illustrated with decorated title-page and several full-page drawings by Peter Hurd, and also with photographs and facsimiles of letters and documents, a total of 24 in all, and with cartographic endpapers. Large 8vo, publisher's original black cloth, pictorially decorated and lettered in gilt on the upper cover and lettered in gilt on the spine, in the original white paper printed dustjacket featuring Peter Hurd illustrations on the spine and front cover. xi, 366 pp. A very good and handsome copy, the black cloth rich and unfaded with bright gilt, hinges solid, the text toned a bit to ivory as depression era paper is prone but otherwise clean and well preserved, the scarce jacket with edge-wear and a little chipping and some general age to the white paper.

Edizione: inscribed by the author and signed, the inscription is to a fellow member of the antiquarian society. <br> thomas mason was a captain of the high seas, sailing from philadelphia in the years before, during and after the american revolution. this interesting account of his life and adventures was written by his great-great-grandson, with the aid of a journal kept by the mariner during all his seafaring life. pleasants took great care to make his narrative accurate in every particular, not only with regard to the life and character of thomas mason but also as concerns the events of the time.<br> dramatically adding to this narrative are peter hurd's impressive drawings. no stranger to maritime themes, his bold pen an ink style images truly give life to these pages.
