Descrizione

Sm. 8vo., Second Edition, on laid paper, short tears in title and following leaf expertly repaired; early nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, red sprinkled edges, neatly rebacked in calf to style, back with raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in blind, a very good, bright, clean, fresh, crisp copy. With nineteenth century personal bookplate on front paste-down. Three preliminary leaves are covered with a neat and scholarly MS record of the background and authorship of this notable work, including a detailed reference to a published letter by Gilpin in reference to his authorship. First issued in 1796 by 'Josiah Frampton', the dialogues were alleged to have taken place between the author and Dean Stillingfleet of St. Paul's. This second edition, now anonymous, is considerably revised and enlarged. A REMARKABLY WELL-PRESERVED COPY.
