The photographs were taken at residences for mentally retarded between 1969 and 1971, in the last years of Arbus's life. Although she considered doing a book on the subject, the vast majority of these pictures have remained unpublished until now".
Beginning in 1969 and continuing through the last two years of her life, Diane Arbus traveled regularly by bus to New Jersey to photograph people at residences for the developmentally and intellectually disabled. Her first destination, the coeducational Woodbridge State School, was just across the Hudson from her Manhattan apartment. Quite soon, though, she determined that an all-female institution in Vineland, in the southern part of the state, provided richer opportunities.  Arbus exposed roughly 1,900 frames of film in these institutions; she committed suicide in July 1971 without having fully edited or titled the pictures. It fell to her older daughter, Doon, to decide what constituted the series, relying (but perhaps not exclusively) on images Arbus chose to print. A book published under Doon's auspices in 1995 included 51 pictures."Untitled è il terzo volume dedicato al lavoro di Diane Arbus, e l'unico dedicato esclusivamente a un singolo progetto: le fotografie sono state scattate in residenze per ritardati mentali tra il 1969 e il 1971, negli ultimi anni della vita di Arbus. A partire dal 1969 e fino agli ultimi due anni della sua vita, Diane Arbus si recava regolarmente in autobus nel New Jersey per fotografare le persone nelle residenze per disabili mentali. La sua prima destinazione, la Woodbridge State School, era proprio di fronte al suo appartamento di Manhattan, dall'altra parte all'Hudson. Ben presto, però, decise che l'istituto femminile di Vineland, nella parte meridionale dello Stato, offriva maggiori opportunità.  In questi istituti la Arbus scattò circa 1.900 fotogrammi; si suicidò nel luglio 1971 senza aver montato o titolato completamente le immagini. Fu la figlia maggiore, Doon, a decidere cosa costituisse la serie, basandosi (ma forse non esclusivamente) sulle immagini che la Arbus scelse di stampare. Questo libro, pubblicato sotto gli auspici di Doon nel 1995, comprende 51 immagini.
