8vo [20.5 x 13.5 cm]; x, 502 pp, 34 illustrations including 10 plates including frontis (mostly tinted lithographs, some wood engraved), other illustrations including full-page (complete). original cloth with gilt vignette and gilt spine title lettering (dull but visible), rear joint torn, ink name on front endpaper, overall very good with only light foxing on few leaves, else clean. A picture of this book is available upon request by email The author, who mentions his meeting with Charles Waterton in England where he received his education, travelled widely in Venezuela, describing nature, the peoples, customs, etc. The plates include a jaguar, view of Caracas, scenes with horses, etc. Welch 257 (citing the 2nd edition). Sabin 58140. There were various later printings, some under different titles, but the later editions had fewer or no plates.
