I Santi Rocco, Pietro, Paolo e Sebastiano

Bulino, 1573, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a destra '1573 / Horatius Aquilanus formis'. In basso a sinistra 'Pompeo Aqlano inven'. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva con filigrana "ancora nel cerchio" con sottilissimi margini o rifilata al rame, in perfetto stato di conservazione.La stampa devozionale deriva da un disegno di Pompeo Cesura detto Pompeo dell’Aquila.Raffigura al centro i santi protettori di Roma, Pietro e Paolo, accompagnati dai loro attributi canonici, rispettivamente il libro e le chiavi e il libro con la spada. San Pietro è affiancato a sinistra da San Rocco, i cui attributi distintivi sono il cane, il bastone e la piaga. Al fianco destro di S. Paolo è raffigurato, legato ad un albero, San Sebastiano.La rappresentazione di S. Sebastiano è piuttosto inusuale perché, anche se legato ad un albero, non viene mostrato trafitto dalle frecce.Al verso, timbro della collezione A C. de Poggi (Lugt 617).Bellissimo esemplare di questa rarissima incisione. After Pompeo dell’Aquila.A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with "anchor in a circle" watermark, with very thin margins or trimmed to the platemark, perfect condition.The devotional engraving depicts Peter and Paul, the patron saints of Rome, flanked by Roch or Rochus of Montpellier and Sebastian, protectors against the plague. The print is derived from a design by Pompeo Cesura.The apostles carry their attributes: a key, a sword, and a book. Paul looks down towards a dead tree with a living shoot, a symbol of the Resurrection. On the left, Rochus, accompanied by a dog and watched over by a flying angel, holds a pilgrim's staff. The representation of Sebastian is unusual in that, although bound to a tree, he is not shown pierced with arrows.
