Il turco e il mendicante

Acquaforte, 1659-1671 circa. Tavola VI della serie Paesaggi con rovine, architetture e figure. La serie è costituita da sette tavole, inclusa la prima di dedica al marchese Ottavio Gonzaga. Frans Geffels (Anversa, 1635 - Mantova, 1694) fu pittore, incisore e architetto. Formatosi nella città natia nella bottega dell'editore Mideller, giunse a Mantova verso il 1659, probabilmente chiamato dal conterraneo Daniel van den Dyck che, morto nel 1663, Geffels sostituì come prefetto delle fabbriche ducali gonzaghesche, voluto in questo ruolo da Carlo II di Gonzaga-Nevers. Servì poi anche l'ultimo duca Ferdinando Carlo. Bella prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva, con margini su tre lati, rifilata al rame a sinistra, qualche piccola ossidazione, per il resto in buono stato di conservazione. Frans Geffels (Antwerp, 1635 - Mantua, 1694) was a painter, engraver and architect. Trained in his native city in the workshop of the publisher Mideller, he arrived in Mantua around 1659, probably called by his fellow countryman Daniel van den Dyck, who died in 1663, Geffels replaced as prefect of the Gonzaga ducal factories, wanted in this role by Charles II of Gonzaga-Nevers. He then also served the last duke Ferdinand Charles. A fine impression on contemporary laid paper, with margins on three side, trimmed to the platemark at the left, some foxing, otherwise good condition.
