Rarissima carta geografica del Lazio di Jean Matal, pubblicata nell’ Italia Geographiche Historice que Tabulis Aeneis 37 delineata…. Auctore Conrado Leone Historice stampato a Colonia nel 1598. La carta del Lazio di Johannes Metellus prende come modello quella pubblicata da Mercator nel 1589 riducendola circa alla metà e semplificandola nei contenuti. Il volume sull'Italia fu pubblicato un anno dopo la sua morte e nel titolo compare come autore "Conrado Leone Historico". Meurer ha dimostrato che Konrad Loew è uno degli pseudonimi usati da Matthias Quad, ed è molto probabile che a lui si debba il completamento e la pubblicazione del volume di Metellus. Metellus, Jean Matal (ca 1520-1597), umanista, archeologo e geografo, fu in contatto con parecchi studiosi del suo tempo; fu anche amico e corrispondente di Ortelius. Un suo biglietto datato 1575, compare nell'Album Amicorum ' di Ortelius, con parole di grande considerazione per colui "qui a mis le monde en lumière" e che definisce "le plus grande descripteur de 1'Univers" (Album Amicorum 1969). ' La stessa tavola fu utilizzata in un atlante dedicato all'Europa, nel 1600, e nello ' Speculum Orbis ' del 1602, il più esteso atlante fino ad allora pubblicato. Acquaforte, impressa su carta vergata coeva, testo in tedesco al verso, una macchia di ruggine nel margine sinistro, per il resto in perfetto stato di conservazione. Opera molto rara. The map of Latium by Johannes Metellus takes as a model the one published by Mercator in 1589, reducing it to about half and simplifying its contents. The volume on Italy was published a year after his death and in the title appears as the author "Conrado Leone Historico." Meurer has shown that Konrad Loew is one of the pseudonyms used by Matthias Quad, and it is very likely that he was responsible for the completion and publication of the Metellus volume.
