Gerard de Jode, era cartografo, incisore, tipografo ed editore nella città di Anversa, attivo all’incirca nello stesso periodo di Ortelius. Nel 1547 ottenne il privilegio per l’attività editoriale, tuttavia non fu mai in grado di rappresentare un’effettiva minaccia per il suo rivale in affari. Per ironia della sorte, pubblicò il famoso Mappamondo del rivale, in otto fogli, nel 1564.
