Titolo nel grande cartiglio in basso a sinistra: ' PARMÆ | ET | PLACENTIÆ | DVCATVS. Nel cartiglio in alto a sinistra troviamo la scala miliare. Esemplare nel secondo stato; esiste una prova di stampa della carta che è ancora priva dei cartigli. Tratto dalla rara edizione italiana del ' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ' stampata ad Anversa da Jean Baptiste Vrients nel 1608 e poi nel 1612. Secondo Peter Meurer (Meurer p. 18-189) la carta è interamente basata sulla carta di Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617) del 1598/99, che secondo Almagià fu completata prima del 1600 (cfr. L’Italia di Giovanni Antoni Magini, 1922, pp. 48-51). Questa carta fu incisa nel 1608, da o per conto di Jan Baptista Vrients, per essere inserita nel ' Theatrum ' di Ortelius, che Vrients continuò a pubblicare come esecutore testamentario di Ortelius. Pertanto, è apparsa solo nelle quattro edizioni finali dell'atlante di Ortelius ed è di conseguenza una delle mappe più scarse tra quelle che compaiono in quell'opera. ' Costituisce l’apice della cartografia decorativa e si colloca tra le mappe più sontuosamente incise. Come noto, gli atlanti di Ortelius stampati da Vrients godevano di una colorazione a mano di altissima qualità e la presente carta ne è un esempio: la colorazione è particolarmente ricca. Johannes Baptista Vrients (1552-1612) fu incisore, editore e cartografo fiammingo. Non si sa molto dei suoi primi anni di vita, ma si presume che sia cresciuto come apprendista tra i cartografi di Anversa, dove la corporazione lo nominò maestro nel 1575. Negli anni 1590 eseguì mappe del mondo per Plancius e Linschoten. Nel 1600 divenne esecutore testamentario di Ortelius e acquisì le tavole del ' Theatrum ' dopo la morte del cartografo. Tra il 1606 e il 1612 pubblicherà altre edizioni dell'atlante di Ortelius. Vrients acquistò anche le tavole dello ' Speculum ' di De Jode intorno al 1600, ma non ripubblicò quell'opera, anche se conservò le tavole di De Jode raffiguranti gli Elettori del Sacro Romano Impero, ristampandole nelle sue edizioni dell'atlante di Ortelius dopo il 1603. Le edizioni del ' Theatrum ' di Vrients non furono pubblicate ad Anversa (la città era caduta durante la guerra dei Paesi Bassi con la Spagna) ma ad Amsterdam. Taken from the rare Italian edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum printed in Antwerp by Jean Baptiste Vrients in 1608 and again in 1612. According to Peter Meurer (Meurer p. 18-189) the map is entirely based on Giovanni Antonio Magini's (1555-1617) map of 1598/99, which according to Almagià was completed before 1600 (see L'Italia di Giovanni Antoni Magini, 1922, pp. 48-51). This map was engraved in 1608, by or for Jan Baptista Vrients, for inclusion in Ortelius' ' Theatrum, which Vrients continued to publish as Ortelius' executor. Therefore, it appeared only in the final four editions of Ortelius' atlas and is consequently one of the scarcest maps among those appearing in that work. It constitutes the pinnacle of decorative cartography and ranks among the most lavishly engraved maps. As is well known, Ortelius' atlases printed by Vrients enjoyed the highest quality hand coloring, and the present map is an example of this: the coloring of the cartouches, compass roses, and ships is particularly rich. Johannes Baptista Vrients (1552-1612) was a Flemish engraver, publisher and cartographer. Not much is known about his early life, but it is assumed that he grew up as an apprentice among the cartographers of Antwerp, where the guild appointed him master in 1575. In the 1590s he executed maps of the world for Plancius and Linschoten. In 1600 he became executor of Ortelius' will and acquired the plates of the ' Theatrum ' after the cartographer's death. Between 1606 and 1612 he published more editions of Ortelius' atlas. Vrients also acquired De Jode's ' Speculum ' plates around 1600. Vrients' editions of the ' Theatrum ' were published not in Antwerp (the city had fallen during the Dutch war with Spain) but in Amsterdam.
