The publication in Russian was facilitated by the CIA as part of an effort to embarass and ultimately to undermine the USSR, and several hundred copies were distributed via the Vatican's stall at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. - The journey ... continua a leggere

    • Note Bibliografiche: 356 x 279 mm. Rare shot from the camera of Perfecto Romero, the photographer of the Cuban Revolution, who signed and dated "1959" on the verso. The subject of the photograph is Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959), hero of the revolution who was presumed dead only months later when his small plane mysteriously disappeared on a night flight. The verso also has a note from the Museo de la Revolucion, which thanks Rosa Maria Medel, the daughter of the Cuban-American singer Rosita Fornés, for this image: "A usted, por sos valores profesionales, patrioticos, eticos y por su firmeza como digna represent... continua a leggere

    • Note Bibliografiche: 495 x 605 mm (image: 300 x 450 mm). In one room in Havana, sharing cigars: Che Guevara, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Antonio Núñez Jiménez. Guevara had a lifelong interest in French existentialism, and after the success of the Cuban Revolution found himself able to invite Sartre and de Beauvoir to visit Havana in his new role as guerilla fighter turned diplomat. Jiménez, a local, was not a philosopher but a scientist and geologist - another occupation Guevara admired - and the first president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. The original photo was taken by Alberto Korda, who h... continua a leggere

    • Note Bibliografiche: 277 x 202 mm. Guevara appears together with his mother Celia de la Serna y Llosa (1906-1965). Celia's politics influenced those of her famous son. Though in-person meetings like the one shown here were rare once Che had begun his revolutionary career, he wrote her frequently. His letters to her are evidence of an ongoing discussion, sometimes with disagreement, of their own interpretations of political and social ideologies, often in regard to Che's activities. According to one account, Celia survived an assassination attempt while giving a speech, and was said to have continued to speak th... continua a leggere

Castro was initially supposed to referee, but at the last minute decided to take part as a contestant - and won the day. - Captured here in a candid snapshot by Castro's photographer, Alberto Korda, Hemingway presents the trophy to Castro, and the two are able to speak briefly. Communicating with Anita Drysdale Hawkins (1874-1957), a friend and employee at his Wardenclyffe plant, he discusses the recent departure of a troublesome guest, chastising himself: "I am glad that he is gone [...] Time and time again in my life I have made such mistakes and I... continua a leggere
