Descrizione

London, Lovell Reeve [Ashford, L. Reeve & Co.], 1912. 8vo (21.9 x 15.2 cm). xxiii, 392 pp., two portraits (one tissue-guarded), two folding maps, 27 plates. Original blindstamped red buckram. Gilt title on the spine and front board. Top edge gilt. An excellent copy of an essential work for anyone interested in the Cocos Keeling Islands (current name) in the tropical Indian Ocean southwest of Java, or in oceanic islands in general. It is very well illustrated; not only with 27 plates but also with 79 text figures including large photos. Appendix with lists of the principle plants, birds, fish, molluscs, insects, etc. in the rear, as well as a very useful bibliography. Expanded and updated from the 1910 first edition, which is very rare (either published in very small numbers or retracted by the publisher). Frederic Wood Jones (1879-1954) was a British anatomist, anthropologist and naturalist. In 1905-1906 he took a job on the Cocos-Keeling Islands as medical officer to the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, which allowed him ample time for exploring the islands and the waters around them. Like Charles Darwin, who visted these islands before him, he was keenly interested in the origin of the islands, and the genesis of atolls in general. This copy illustrating the address change of the publisher from London to Ashford, having a printed address label of the second locality pasted on top of the first. Otherwise no markings. Spine slightly sunned - as always with red covers; internally clean, spotless (a rare condition). A very good copy.
