Rare, expanded second edition in bookform and the basic theory on the "Kontinentalverschiebungstheorie" which only was accepted by the "official" scientists and geologists after World War II. The German meteorologist and geologist Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) first introduced his theory of continental drift in 1912, in a geographical magazine. In 1915 Friedrich Vieweg published the first edition of the first book by Wegener on this subject. Wegener continued collecting data to support his theory which lead to this second edition, which was published as Band 66 of "Die Wissenschaft. Sammlung von Einzeldarstellungen aus den Gebieten der Naturwissenschaften und der Technik" which were edited by Prof. Dr. Eilhard Wiedemann. In 1922, a third edition was published, and in 1929 a fourth. Especially the latter is much more common. Small, pencilled, owner's inscription "Edith" on the front free endpaper recto. This copy once owned by Edith Maria Katharina Kristan (1934-1995). She was an Austrian geologist and micropalaeontologist who later married the Austrian geologist Alexander Tollmann (1928-2007). Pages evenly toned due to their quality, vague pencil marks on one leaf. Otherwise a very good, clean copy in original binding.
