Magdeburg, Walther Niemann, 1893. 8vo (20.1 x 13.3 cm). [iv], 242 pp.; 17 text engravings. Contemporary grained half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. Marbled edges. = A very rare work on the herpetology of north-western Germany, in particular the higher elevated regions. The work was compiled by the German herpetologist, geologist and palaeontologist Wilhelm "Willy" Georg Wolterstorff (1864-1943). His large collection of salamanders (over 10,000 specimens), housed in the Magdeburg natural history museum, was entirely destroyed in WWII. The illustrations are of taxonomically important parts of the species treated. This is an offprint from the Jahresbericht und Abhandlungen des Naturwissenschaftlichen Vereins zu Magdeburg, a little-known natural history periodical. Former private owner's stamp on the front free endpaper recto and top margin of the title page. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Adler II, pp. 113-114.
