First Dubrovnik edition of this scarce 18th century dictionary in Italian, Latin and Illyrian, mainly based on the Ragusan literary sources, but also includes the Cakavian sources; supplemented by a short grammar of Croatian, written by Ardelio Della Bella who was an Italian and Croatian Catholic priest, Jesuit, lexicographer and missionary. Illyrian language, Indo-European language spoken in pre-Roman times along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and in southeastern Italy. The language of the Illyrian fragments found in Italy is usually called Messapic, or Messapian. Ardelio Della Bella was from an old and prominent Italian family from Florence, but he was born in Foggia. He was educated in his hometown and his studies in philosophy and law in Naples. In 1677 he joined the Jesuit order in Rome, and from 1681 he lived mainly in Dubrovnik, where he taught Latin and Croatian languages with oratory for the first three years at the Jesuit college. He returned to Rome in 1684 to continue his studies at Gregorian University. However, Della Bella saw herself in the role of a missionary, not in the role of a professor at the college. Therefore, at his own request, he returned to Dubrovnik, where he operated from 1688 to 1691, with a short break in 1689. He devoted the rest of his life to missions in the Dalmatian regions, for which he renounced the service of professor of philosophy in Rome. In 1694 he returned to Dubrovnik, where he worked as a preacher and missionary, and from 1696 to 1702 he was rector of the Dubrovnik College. In addition, in that period he organized the completion of the construction of the college building and began the construction of the church of St. Ignatius. He briefly returned to Italy in 1702 for a year to teach scholastic theology in Florence. Cannot be found any copy in OCLC.
