Charles Dickens

Dickens
(Portsmouth 1812-Gad's Hill, Kent 1870) nato da genitori di umili origini, dovette interrompere gli studi per andare a lavorare in una fabbrica di lucido per scarpe. Dickens portò dunque a termine la sua istruzione in modo sommario, lavorando come commesso in uno studio legale e poi come cronista parlamentare e collaboratore di giornali umoristici. A soli ventisei anni divenne uno scrittore di successo con il libro "Il circolo Pickwick". Nel 1846 fondò il quotidiano «Daily News» e dal 1850 al 1859 diresse il settimanale «Household Words».
