Er schrieb zwei historische Romane �ber den englischen Abenteurer Thomas Morton, die er anonym ver�ffentlichte. Der Roman Morton's Hope enth� autobiographische Elemente und beschreibt in der Figur des Otto von Rabenmark Bismarck als eine nach au�n rauflustige, nach innen aber sensible Pers�nlichkeit. Bald konzentrierte er sich aber vor allem auf das Studium der Geschichte der Niederlande. 1851 bis 1855 forschte er vor allem in Dresden, Br�ssel und Den Haag, um Material zusammenzutragen. Die monumentalen Werke, die aus dieser Quellenarbeit hervorgingen, sind gepr� von unverhohlenem Antikatholizismus und der daraus folgenden Begeisterung f�r den Befreiungskampf der protestantischen Niederlande gegen Spanien. Die vier B�e von The Rise of the Dutch Republic wurden unter anderem auch ins Deutsche �bersetzt und galten lange Zeit als Standardwerk. Wenn es auch f�r die Geschichtswissenschaft an Relevanz verloren hat, so ist Motleys Werk bis heute f�r seine stilistische Virtuosit�und erz�erische Kraft bekannt. Daher findet es auch h�ig Aufnahme in Werken zur Literaturgeschichte der USA . Van Oldenbarnevelt was born in Amersfoort. He studied law at the universities of Leuven, Bourges, Heidelberg, and Padua, and traveled in France and Italy before settling permanently in The Hague. He favored William the Silent in his revolt against Felipe II de Habsburgo the regent of Kingdom of Castile and Leon, and fought in William's army. In his later years he was a supporter of the Arminians, during the religious-political controversy which split the young Dutch Republic.
