Frankly I had much rather not speak. If I did that sort of thing at all well I would be very glad to do it, but I am - at this sort of thing - heavy, self-conscious, dull & disinteresting. No one would be the happier for my suffering and it would convert an occasion to which I look forward with the most festive anticipation, into a task and a terror [.]" (20 March 1903). - About the treatment of the political activist Clarence Henry Norman (1886-1974): "[.] why is Norman leaving the club? Is he being expelled for any reason? Or has he simply resigned his membership? [.]" - "[.] Mr C. H. Norman writes to complain that his membership of the N.L.C. has been 'cancelled' on account of his anti-war letters. I am half-shocked at this. He impresses me as being quite insane upon the war question but quite honest & I fail to see the justification for this expulsion of an esteemed most desirable member [.]" (undated, but ca. 1914). - "Dear Mr Henderson, Yes I'm sorry. But do you know I didn't enter the N.L.C. from one year's end to another. I have had to go through my list of annual subscriptions & cut them down. And there it is! [.]" (13 April 1932).
