Descripción

Berlin, August Hirschwald, 1886-1887. Three volumes in three. 8vo (21.7 x 14.3 cm). 602 [204; 218; 180] pp.; seven [4; 3; 0] double-sized or larger lithographed plates, of which three in chromolithography. Uniform embossed cloth with printed titles on the front boards and spines. All edges gilt. = Complete set of a rare medical periodical with fine illustrations. Ernst von Bergmann (1836-1907] was the first physician to introduce heat sterilisation of surgical instruments. "Bergmann was a pioneer in the evolution of asepsis. His corrosive sublimate method of antisepsis was gradually merged into steam sterilization and the present-day elaborate ritual of asepsis" (Garrison and Morton). A Berlin hospital is named after him. Provenance: the medical doctor, Karl Theodor, Duke in Bavaria (1839-1909), who founded the Augenklinik Herzog Carl Theodor (the Herzog Carl Theodore Eye Hospital) in Munich in 1895. "The clinic in the Nymphenburger Strasse remains one of the most respected eye clinics in Bavaria to date. Between 1895 and 1909 Carl Theodor personally carried out more than 5,000 cataract operations as well as treating countless other eye disorders" (Wikipedia). A very good set. Garrison and Morton, 4th ed., p. 767.
