Descripción

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Although best known for his great influence on medieval thought, Boethius was born some 1500 years ago in the late Roman Empire of the West. Aware that a collapse of liberal studies threatened, he sought to translate, distil and interpret Greek learning in order to preserve it for the future. A politician as well as a scholar, he fell out of favour, but from a long spell of imprisonment emerged his most remarkable work, the Consolation of Philosophy. This masterly analysis of human misery and happiness was revered and studied down the ages in Latin and in the vernacular, by cleric andlayman alike. -- In this commemorative volume, Margaret Gibson has gathered together contributions by scholars from a wide spectrum of disciplines classical and medieval; philosophical, historical, literary and linguistic. Illuminating his work from different directions, they enable us to see his achievements in the context of his own times and of the history of thought, tracing his influence right through the Middle Ages until the overthrow of scholasticism in the Renaissance. The first part deals with his life and circumstances; the second with his work on logic, mathematics, music and theology; and the third with the various traditions of the Consolation of Philosophy. The book is illustrated with manuscripts of his works and augmented by bibliographical notes and detailed indexes. -- This is not, however, a general survey of existing knowledge. Instead, each contributor explores either a field in which little work has hitherto been attempted or one in which interpretations have changed radically in recent years. The result is an exciting volume on the frontiers of research. While its main appeal will be to the scholar, the lucidity of the style and the clarity of the argument also make it a fitting introduction for the general reader to the philosopher who was largely responsible for passing on to medieval Europe the fruits of ancient learning. -- CONTENTS -- Introduction HENRY CHADWICK -- BOETHIUS LIFE AND CIRCUMSTANCES -- Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius -- JOHN MATTHEWS -- The Scholar and his Public -- HELEN KIRKBY -- THE SCHOLASTIC WRITINGS -- Boethius and the Study of Logic JONATHAN BARNES -- Boethian Logic in the Medieval West OSMUND LEWRY -- The De Arithmetica and the De Musica JOHN CALDWELL -- Boethius Geometry and Astronomy DAVID PINGREE -- Boethius in the Medieval Quadrivium ALISON WHITE -- The Text of the Opuscula Sacra JOHN MAIR -- The Opuscula Sacra in the Middle Ages MARGARET GIBSON -- THE DE CONSOLATIONE -- PHILOSOPHIAE -- Literary Design ANNA CRABBE -- The Latin Tradition -- JACQUELINE BEAUMONT -- The Boethian Metrum Bella bis quinis CHRISTOPHER PAGE -- Aspects of the Medieval French and English Traditions ALASTAIR MINNIS -- Latin and Vernacular in the Northern European Tradition NIGEL PALMER -- Epilogue: Boethius in the Renaissance ANTHONY GRAFTON.
