"Nylander studied medicine, receiving a degree in 1847. Nylander pioneered the technique of determining the taxonomy of lichens by the use of chemical reagents, such as potassium hydroxide, tinctures of iodine and calcium hypochlorite, still used by lichenologists as the K and C tests. [He] was the first to realise the effect of atmospheric pollution on the growth of lichens, an important discovery that paved the way for the use of lichens to detect pollution and determine the cleanness of air" (Wikipedia). This set, edited by T. Ahti, consists of the last three of six volumes. and includes papers published between 1888-1900 (vol. IV); the complete Synopsis methodica lichenum published between 1858-1869, and Lindau's Index nominum Nylanderi synopsis Lichenum published in 1907 (vol. V); and in vol. VI his Prodromus lichenographiae Galliae et Algeriae (1857), Lichenes Scandinaviae (1861), and Lichenes Lapponiae orientalis (1882). An excellent, clean set.
