Through the analysis of unpublished archival materials and ample international documentation, this volume retraces the history of the libraries of the Society of Jesus, while providing a new and fascinating historical perspective. Whereas many previous studies primarily focused on analyzing the library patrimony of Eighteenth century Jesuits, the present work concerns the history of the order?s collections during the two centuries prior to the papal suppression of 1773. As an exemplum, Perugia?s unique library history is extensively presented and treated, while being oriented within the larger theme of Jesuit cultural history.Through the analysis of unpublished archival materials and ample international documentation, this volume retraces the history of the libraries of the Society of Jesus, while providing a new and fascinating historical perspective.
