Descripción

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Somewhat stained bottom edge, pencil annotation on endpaper, otherwise very good and clean. / Etwas angeschmutzter Fuchnitt, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatzblatt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - Preface: In this study I have tackled what I consider to be an important aspect of the poetic method of Apollonius Rhodius, namely his use of sources. This is not to say that it is another study in the vein of the outdated Quellenforschung ; it is something different. I have tried to demonstrate how Apollonius' method was one of creative selectivity and subtle innovation. In other words, I am attempting to show what Apollonius did with the material he had at hand and why he handled it in this way. This approach is not completely new and many a scholar, as we can see e.g. from Herter's survey in JAW 285,213 sqqhas given some attention to this aspect, but then mostly has pointed out similarities with and differences from the tradition without going into the question of why Apollonius did so. I have selected at random five episodes from the Argonautica , (1) the death of Idmon (2) the role of Phineus (3) the murder of Apsyrtus (4) Euphemus, a clod and a tripod, and (5) the Lemnian women. I have tried to reconstruct the tradition which Apollonius had at his disposal, to focus on the main differences with the Apollonian poem, and to explain the rationale for them. The examination of these episodes in this way has enabled me to come also to greater issues of important themes in this epic, such as themis, and to a discussion of characteristics of the hero Jason. - Contents: 1. The Death of Idmon -- 2. Phineus: The Perils of Prophecy -- 3. The Murder of Apsyrtus -- 4. Euphemus, a Clod and a Tripod -- 5. The Lemnian Women -- Epilogue. ISBN 9789025610661
