Descripción
London, Edward Stanford, [no date, but ca. 1860]. 8vo (24.6 x 17.6 cm). Four fold-out diagrammatic engravings by J. W. Lowry. Quarter linen over printed limp boards. Printed label mounted on front board. = The engravings are good and the naming is accurate. A pencilled note on the front board suggests that the British naturalist and engraver Joseph Wilson Lowry (1803-1879) is the author. He was the author and engraver of two other works in the series, Diagrams of Natural history, viz. I. Characteristic British fossils, and II. Characteristic British Tertiary fossils. However, in an overview of all published parts on the inside of the rear wrapper, "Dr. Woodward" is listed as author. According to Caprotti, this is the British malacologist Samuel Pickworth Woodward (1821-1865). Caprotti II, p. 36 [200]; Nissen ZBI, 2569.
