Descripción

Stuttgart, Kernen Verlag, 1907-1924. 4to. (30.5 x 24.1 cm) in two volumes. viii, vi, 1141 pp.; 203 chromolithographed plates (1-194; 100B-102B, 110B, 113B, 120B, 102C, 120C, 120D). Slightly later uniform blind half buckram over marbled boards. Pictorial title mounted. = Single part, in two large volumes, of one of the largest and most beautifully illustrated works on butterflies and moths. Its fine plates were made using the process of 10-14 colour lithography, and its excellent quality has remained unsurpassed. This parts deals with mostly quite colourful butterflies from the Americas. Many species are new. The author, Friedrich Joseph Adalbert Seitz (1860-1938), planned to finish the whole work in 1912. This proved to be quite unrealistic as publication stopped in 1954, and several volumes remained unfinished. The most important collections of butterflies were consulted including those of L. W. Rothschild of Tring, the British Museum, the Paris Natural History Museum, the Senckenberg Museum at Frankfurt, as well as collections in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Australia, South- and North America, etc. A uniform set. In this set, the forst volume contains the pages up to p. 512, and the plates up to 102B; the second volume contains the remainder of the text and plates. If there is a "B" plate, then the number of the first plate has an "A" added. Bindings with some shelf-wear, internally mild signs of use; pp. 139-142 detached; plates 5-8 placed in reverse order; second plate numbered 144 corrected to 145; otherwise internally clean, unmarked. Cat. BM(NH), p. 1895; Nissen ZBI, 3799N.
