Descripción

Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The astounding career of Ertone of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, who was responsible perhaps more than any other artist for the 'Art Deco look', has passed another milestone on a road that is as rich in variety as it is long. Publication of this book marks the artist's ninetieth year, and his seventieth year of professional success in a phenomenal range of visual arts. After more than half a century of international acclaim as a designer of sets and costumes for productions such as the Folies Berg, George White'sScanda/s, and several Hollywood films, and as the designer of fashions and covers that gave Harper's Bazaar the image of elegance it projected in the 1920s and 30s-at a time when most men would be content to rest on their laurels- Ertegan the exciting but demanding work of creating graphics to be issued in limited editions as fine art prints. As Time art critic John Ashbery wrote: 'It is given to few artists to achieve fame. and then re-emerge late in life into greater fame. Ertill certainly create new images in the years to come, but Ertt Ninety contains full colour reproductions of all 208 graphics that had been completed at the time the book went to press. Many of these prints have hot yet been released and have never been seen by the public. The artist himself has written a charming and revealing essay in which he talks about his creative ideas, his way of working, his career, and some of the interesting people who crossed his path. Also reprinted here are a dozen of the elegant pieces the artist wrote for Harper's Bazaar to describe his cover designs (William Randolph Hearst, then owner of the magazine, once remarked, 'How wou Id you know it was Harper's Bazaar without an Ertover?') A preface by Jack Solomon, the artist's printer and publisher, defines Ert position in the world of fine art graphics. There is also a detailed chronology outlining the main features of Ert career, and a full index of the works, giving technical data for each.
