Con questo volume l’autore ricostruisce l’identità dei “residenti stranieri” a Fiesole dai primi anni del Novecento sino alla vigilia del II° conflitto mondiale e fa rivivere quella particolare, magica atmosfera nella quale si trovarono involontariamente immersi e che spesso li mise in contatto con la folta colonia d’intellettuali, composta dai più ben noti e studiati: Arnold Böcklin, W. O. J. Niuewenkamp, Charles Augustus Strong, Bernard Berenson e Adolf von Hildebrand. La particolare magica atmosfera fiesolana che caratterizzava la vita della cittadina sino alla vigilia della Seconda Guerra Mondiale fece sì che Fiesole divenisse luogo di riferimento per l’alta società internazionale presente o di passaggio in Toscana e rende, così, comprensibile il ruolo socio-culturale che la cittadina ricopriva sin dal Seicento e che l’aveva fatta assurgere a oggetto di culto tra i grands tourists. Fiesole era ed è inoltre un luogo ricco di opere d’arte, di resti di gloriose civiltà antiche, di tradizioni letterarie e di paesaggi che hanno trovato nell’arte la loro consacrazione.

Foreigners in Fiesole in the Early 1900s
The Author recreates here the identities of the “foreign inhabitants”, who lived in Fiesole from the early 20th century until the Eve of the World War II. He recollects that particular and magic atmosphere in which inhabitants were immersed unconsciously and which permitted them to meet the large colony of the most popular and well-known intellectuals: Arnold Böcklin, W. O. J. Niuewenkamp, Charles Augustus Strong, Bernard Berenson and Adolf von Hildebrand. The particular magic atmosphere of Fiesole, which had characterized the life of the town until the Eve of the World War II, allowed it to become the reference point for the international high society, present in or passing through Tuscany, together with the social and cultural role that the town has had since the Seventeenth century and that transformed it into an object of worship among grands tourists. Moreover, Fiesole was and is a place rich in arts masterpieces, glorious ruins of ancient civilizations, literary traditions and landscapes which found their consecration in art.
