Descripción
First edition, small 4to (210 x 150mm), xv, 61, [3]pp., on page facing title: London, William Pickering, text browned and spotted, orig. paper wrappers, lacks spine. A literal reprint of a Twelfth Century manuscript, written by an English disciple of Abelard, named Hilarius. The collection commences with rhymed Latin amorous verses, and is finished with three mysteries--the Resurrection of Lazarus, History of Daniel, and St. Nicholas and the thieves. Some of the songs end with a mediÊval French refrain. These mystery plays may be considered as perhaps some of the very earliest of this class of composition.
