Four leading Vermeer scholars examine the life and work of this 17th-century Dutch master, discussing his sources, the stylistic and iconographic context of his work, and his technique. The early and lesser-known religious and mythological paintings are analyzed in their relationship to his later, more familiar, genre paintings.
