Descripción
Leipzig, Reclam, 1816. 8vo (20.6 x 12.1 cm). Script title; iv pp. (tipped-in in rear); 40 double-sized engraved plates with explanatory text leaves, one double-sized chart, showing his ideas about order in nature. Contemporary marbled paper covered boards. Spine with much later, simple paper label with pencilled title. = The complete set of plates, combined with the original four pages with plate explanations, the latter folded and tipped in, of Oken's quite rare first book on natural history. Interestingly, the genus Homo is represented by a man from Oceania. The German naturalist and philosopher Lorenz Oken (1779-1851) is perhaps best-known for his Allgemeine Naturgeschichte für alle Stände, and for being the editor of the early natural history periodical Isis. The huge text volume is not included. Boards a bit rubbed, especially at the spine ends. Internally a very good clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 3008.
