Publisher's burgundy cloth with embossed boards and gilt title on the spine. Black endpapers. = First edition. This work includes four early photos of the Alps. James David Forbes (1808-1868) was a famous Scottish scientist and explorer, whose views on the theory of glaciers conflicted with Tyndell's. Appendix A contains his reply to Tindall. Appendix D is a complete list of his writings. In 1841 he made the first British ascent of the Jungfrau. He published Norway and its Glaciers (1853), Occasional papers on the theory of Glaciers (1859), etc. Boards a bit worn, scattered light foxing, otherwise a very good copy.
