8vo [25 x 16 cm]; xxii, 305 pp, frontis, portraits, plates (one bound upside down), 2 maps including one folding & showing route in red, other illus, glossary of Arabic words. later half blue calf, marbled boards, gilt spine title lettering and gilt decorations in compartments, frontis lightly foxed, generally clean near fine copy in handsome binding, presentation copy from the author, dated 6.4.94 on flyleaf. A picture of this Edward Henry Palmer, author, scholar and writer on middle eastern topics, was murdered on his mission for securing the Suez Canal against Arab attackers. This work, which is both travel narrative and detective, adventure story, describes how Haynes tracks down the murderers, and the route around Sinai, Wadi Sadr, El Arish, Arabia Petraea, etc. The introduction is by Walter Besant. There are appendices by Sir Charles Warren on his connection to the expedition, account of Palmer's original mission, notes on Arabia Petraea.
