Descripción

4to (190 x 228 mm). 65 ff., likely missing one or two leaves (evidenced by unmatched catchwords). Arabic manuscript on paper. Black maghribi script with titles and important words, phrases, and quotations in red. With two full-page talismans drawn in yellow and black ink. Contemporary brown morocco with flap, stamped with medallions, rebacked around the 19th century. A collection of stories and sayings about the life of the Prophet Muhammad in fine North African Maghribi script, including two Suwar excerpted from the Qur'an, and two leaves featuring talismanic drawings. Compiled and copied in 18th century North Africa, this manuscript is primarily a hadith collection, and one which tentatively appears to be particularly focused on women, especially Maryam bint Mansur. The two Suwar copied from the Qur'an are Surah 55, ar-Rahman, which admonishes both humans and jinn to give thanks for the existance of their shared world to Allah alone, and and Surah 67, al-Mulk, which details the fearfulness of Hell. Interspersed with these texts are two talismanic designs painted in yellow ink, one of which incorporates a protective Seal of Solomon motif (or similar). In all, a finely copied manuscript, comprising an intriguing hadith collection. - Binding rebacked. Some paper repairs, especially close to spine.
