Diese Bildmonographie is aus einer denkwurdigen Galerie-Ausstellung in Basel hervorgegangen. Max Ernst nannte sie die schonsten Ausstellung, die ihm von einer Galerie gewidmet worden sei. Mit besonderem Nachdruck wies er auf Schlusselwerke wie "Vox Agelica" hin, das hier doppelseitig farbig reproduziert und in dem einleitenden Aufsatz von Werner Spies "Die Arche des Max Ernst" ausfuhrlich analysiert wird. Dieses Gemalde und manche andere der hier versammelten Hauptwerke haben seither Eingang in grosse offentliche Museen und namhafte Privatsammlungen gefunden. Der vorliegende Bildband vereinigt sie noch einmal zu einer bleibenden Schau der Essenz von Max Ernsts Genie.
