Originally published in London in 1524, the Oratio never went beyond the first edition. According to Pollard and Redgrave (Short Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland and Ireland 1475-1640, 2nd ed. [London, 1976], entry 24944) there are five extant copies of it in English libraries and three in the United States of America. That found in Bodley�s Library, Oxford, has been published by University Microfilms on reel 159. The text presented here is that of the John Rylands Library, Manchester. It was carefully collated with the copies found in the British Library, London, and in Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, but no variant forms were noted. Obvious typographical errors have been corrected and abbreviations have been silently expanded. Accents have been added to the Greek words quoted in the text. -- Wakefield�s Oratio enjoys the distinction of being the first book published in England to have Hebrew type. This, perhaps, accounts for the crude and badly formed characters, which appear to have been cut without any good model. In many instances it will be observed that the author gives only the transliteration of Hebrew words. The Bodleian copy has the missing Hebrew written in the margin. These handwritten glosses, corresponding in each case to the transliterations, could well have been added by Wakefield himself, but of this there is no conclusive proof. In the Latin text, as reproduced here, Wakefield�s Hebrew characters and his transliterations have been preserved, including inconsistencies and incongruities. ISBN 9780866980777
