Descripción
AN ORIGINAL SKETCHBOOK WITH 37 EXTREMELY FINE INDIA INK AND WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS BY JOSEPH PAUL ADRIEN CARRÉ (1870-1941), a celebrated French architect active primarily in Uruguay. The sketchbook measures 9 x 14.5 cm, and is bound in cloth. 1 blank leaf + 37 leaves each with a captioned drawing on the recto. On fine wove paper showing no signs of aging. SIGNED BY CARRÉ WITH HIS HIGHLY ARCHITECTONIC SIGNATURE. Carré served in the military as an engineer in 1897, 1902, and 1904. The address in the sketchbook is 12 rue de Navarin, where Carré lived for a time with his brother, the painter Raoul Carré (1868-1933). The sketchbook offers an unparalleled look at peacetime military life, through the eyes of a highly educated and skilled soldier. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. Housed in a much earlier morocco-backed folding case. UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT, AND UNKNOWN TO SCHOLARSHIP (until now). sxxi
