8vo [22 x 15 cm]; x, 336, [ii, ads] pp, 37 illustrations from drwgs by Thomas Bewick, index. original green pictorial gilt cloth, gilt vignette on spine, gilt title lettering on spine and cover, all edges gilted, edges slightly rubbed, name on endpaper, a near fine copy, clean throughout. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Wood 378: 'The first edition of a deservedly popular work. It has appeared in at least three additional printings'. Some of the material in the book had appeared in The Field in 1871 and is included here with revisions and additions but much of the material had never appeared before.
