Charleston, Holmes [i.e., the author], 1870. 8vo (23.0 x 14.2 cm). 87 pp.; five chromolithographed plates. slightly later burgundy buckram with gilt title on the spine. Original blue and gilt wrappers bound in. = Rare mineralogical-historical paper by the Carolinian geologist Francis Simmons Holmes (1815-1882). Dedicated to, amongst others, Michael Tuomey. The title states "late professor of geology and palaeontology in the college of Charleston", but the author was not too dead to publish this work in 1870. The front wrapper shows a man standing next to a Hadrosaurus skeleton. Spine partly chipped; bookplate on front pastedow and perforated library stamp on title an on text leaf margin; stamp on plate versos (not shining through). A good copy of a rare work. Sabin, 32599. Not in Ward and Carozzi.
