Descripción

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag leicht berieben, Knicke im Schutzumschlag, minimale Randlren, sonst sehr guter Zustand / dust jacket slightly rubbed, creases in dust jacket, minimal edge wear, otherwise very good condition. - The history of Graeco-Roman religion has long been hesitant about accepting the category and phenomena of pilgrimage, largely perhaps because of its resistance to topics that have been strongly associated with Christianity. The essays in this volume have been gathered to demonstrate the richness, diversity, and importance of the practice of pilgrimage in antiquity, and hence to reestablish the significance of sacred travel in the ancient world. The evidence for pilgrimage is copious and variedspanning inscriptions, literary texts, first- person travel accounts, archaeology, art, and architecture. The activities which may be classified under the broad heading of sacred mobility range from the collective travel of civic delegates to the personal journeys of devotees to particular shrines, from the consultation of oracles to initiation in specific local cults or mysteries, from a sacred antiquarianism to the healing of disease. The papers gathered here span the Greek and Roman worlds, as well as early Christianity, whose practices of pilgrimage owe significant debts to pre-Christian patterns of sacred travel that Christendom none the less transformed. / Contents List of figures Abbreviations Contributors Introduction Jas Elsner and Ian Rutherford PART I.
