Descripción

Lediglich der Einband ist leicht berieben und beston. Sonst aber ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar/ Only the binding is slightly rubbed and bumped. Otherwise, however, a very good and clean copy. - It was towards the end of the 19th century that German excavators first brought to light the ruins of ancient Priene, the once prosperous Ionian city of Asia Minor that flourished from the end of the 4th to the end of the 2nd century BC. Before the German excavations, the city had not, however, been altogether unknown: in the middle of the 18th century, through the published drawings of Stuart and Revett, distinguished members of the Society of Dilettanti, the Temple of Athena Polias became widely recognised as one of the most important edifices in the history of Greek architecture. In antiquity the temple had already been admired as a model of the Ionic order. Yet Priene's hold on the imagination goes well beyond the story of a single temple or the perfection of its individual building types, the Prytaneion, the Ekklesiasterion, the Gymnasia and the Agora complex. As Professor Wolfram Hoepfner explains in his extensive introductory chapter, the city was built according to an overall plan that, as reflected in Aristotle's Politics, became a point of reference for the ideal city. Priene was and still remains an important case study, and a review of its architecture as a whole sheds important light on many aspects of the life and thought of the late Classical and early Hellenistic age. This book is intended for scholar and layman alike. To complement its wide-ranging architectural themes, Priene includes an introductory historical note, a chapter on sculpture and pottery, illustrative appendices, an extensive bibliography and fine quality drawings that use the most up-to-date electronic software to process data from the original research material. The results are unique: colour is used to suggest a more naturalistic view of architectural elements; differing interpretations of monuments are juxtaposed; and separate tables relating to the orders of the major buildings are clearly presented. Against this rich background of architectural and historical practice and theory, it is entirely appropriate that Priene the book should, like Priene the city, become a reference work for debates yet to come.
