Edizione: rare in printer's boards, this set is in full contemporary state. published only one year after what is largely considered the author's masterpiece, the last days of pompeii. rienzi is an historical novel based on nicholas gabrini de rienzi, who, from a low and despicable situation, raised himself to sovereign authority in rome, in the fourteenth century; assuming the title of tribune, and proposing to restore the ancient free republic. it is considered one of the best researched of the popular historical novels which so captivited the public of that era. a spectacular story of one of the heroes of the italian renaissance, edward bulwer-lytton personally reworked it into the 1842 libretto for the opera by the same title in which he collaborated with richard wagner.
