Descripción
Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - altersgemsehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - The learned world has gradually come to know of oral poetry as a specific mer with its peculiar techniques and difficulties only in the present century. The great work of Milman Parry on the oral-formulaic nature of the Homeric epics in the 1920s and 1930s and a recent upsurge of interest in spontaneity have heightened attention to the problem of oral poetics without resolving its difficulties. Many have felt that an entirely new approach is needed, one that departs from some of the concepts and criteria long applied with success to written literature. -- The present volume attempts to fill that need. Drawing on general theories of language and creativity developed in sources as disparate as contemporary transformational grammar and ancient Sanskrit philosophy, it examines the statistical phenomena of Homeric poetry in a fresh light, avoiding many of the pitfalls of traditional approaches. It then develops a critical theory for the appreciation of oral poetry based on these fresh findings, and finally offers an interpretation of the Iliad in its broadest humanistic significance.
