Descripción

Nürnberg, Bauer und Raspe (Julius Merz), 1852-[1853]. 4to. Title page to the series, title page and half title to the part, 96 pp.; 14 finely hand-coloured engraved plates. Original boards with printed label pasted on the front board. = Rare part of the largest and longest-running malacological series, started by the German malacologist Heinrich Carl Küster (1807-1876, also the author of this part) in 1837 and abandoned in 1920. According to the label on the front board, this part deals with Paludina, or Section I. [Lieferung 21], with "12 Textbogen und 14 fein gemalte Tafeln". According to the collation given in "2400 years of Malacology" (Annex 2: p. 20) this is the complete part I(21). It does include I(21a), which is an early 20th century sequel by Wilhelm Kobelt. It contains the descriptions and illustrations of the then known species of Valvatidae, Hydrocenidae, and Viviparidae. Small label with the handwritten text "386/Bibliothek/Prof. A. Mousson" in the lower inner corner of the front wrapper verso. Johann Rudolf Albert Mousson (1805-1890) was a French-born Swiss malacologist. Text pages a bit toned, and some with a few spots. First plate toned, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Caprotti II, p. 34 (198); Nissen ZBI, 2723.
